Our Core Educational Services
Program Overview
At Sunflower, our dual-language Early Childhood Education program begins for children as young as 3 years old, provided they are potty-trained and can sit calmly for at least 20 minutes. We welcome both Native English Speakers (NES) and English Language Learners (ELLs) from diverse backgrounds, teaching them to read, write, and speak in both English and Arabic.
Focus on Independence and Character Building
Our approach emphasizes independence and developing a caring, sharing nature, along with respect for the environment. We guide children towards self-control, individual choice, and problem-solving rather than creating a fully teacher-directed environment.
Teaching Methods
Sunflower’s early childhood teachers are experts in both traditional developmental and Montessori methods. They create custom teaching materials for subjects such as reading, math, science, geography, and cultural studies, ensuring a holistic learning experience.
Daily Schedule
Each day begins with “Circle Time” at 8:10 AM, where children engage in routines such as checking the weather, reviewing the calendar, singing songs, and learning new materials. It is a vital part of the day, so punctuality is essential. Block periods are allocated for Islamic Studies, Qur’an, Arabic, physical activities (indoors and outdoors), and arts and crafts. Younger children enjoy a nap after lunch, while Kindergarten students work on skills aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
Language-Rich Environment
Both Pre-K and Kindergarten classes immerse students in dual-language learning, with games, storybooks, pre-writing exercises, dramatic play, and vocabulary-building activities. By the end of kindergarten, most children are reading English at or above grade level, with some even advancing to reading chapter books.
Curriculum
Children can enroll at Sunflower starting at age three and benefit from our strong Montessori program, which teaches social skills, self-discipline, and responsibility. The curriculum covers:
- Core Subjects: Math, English, Science, and Social Studies are taught using hands-on methods and sequential learning with appropriate manipulatives.
- Arabic: Arabic is introduced early, giving children a foundation in a second language starting in preschool.
- Independence: Children learn to manage their behavior and take responsibility, developing self-reliance and becoming role models for younger students.
As children progress through elementary and middle school, Sunflower enhances the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) by incorporating technology, custom teacher-made materials, and interactive teaching methods. Subjects such as Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies are emphasized alongside Physical Education, Computer Technology, and Art. The curriculum also includes Qur’an and Islamic Studies for participating families.
Our Islamic Montessori program blends Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy with Islamic values. The curriculum incorporates:
Qur’an: Teaching children 13-15 short Surahs with Tajweed.
Grace and Courtesy: Teaching children politeness, patience, and self-control.
Practical Life: Developing order, coordination, concentration, and independence through everyday tasks.
Sensorial Lessons: Engaging children’s senses to explore sound, taste, touch, smell, and sight.
Language: Building vocabulary and reading skills through phonics, labels, and the “moveable alphabet.”
Mathematics: Using concrete materials to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, and more.
Social Studies/Science: Exploring history, geography, botany, and zoology through interactive lessons.
Arabic: Providing children with a solid foundation in the Arabic language.
